Radiological Physics - Personnel

Andrew Karellas, Ph.D, FAAPM, Professor of Radiology, Director of Radiological Physics Laboratory

karellasDr. Karellas is a Medical Physicist specializing in digital x-ray imaging, mammography, and on tomographic techniques in breast imaging for the early detection and management of breast cancer. He is an established National Institutes of Health (NIH) - funded investigator and his laboratory was one of the first to conduct research and publish on the use of charge-coupled devices (CCD) for small-format mammography for localization and core biopsies. He has collaborated with industry on the on the development of CCD imagers for stereotactic breast biopsy. His group was among the first to publish on the physical aspects of digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis and they provided medical physics support for the first clinical trial on digital mammography in the US. This research team at UMass has a record of collaboration with other institutions and manufacturers in research relating to the development and adaptation of technology to medical imaging tasks.

Srinivasan Vedantham, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Radiology

vedanthamDr. Vedantham is a key member of the Radiological Physics Laboratory and works closely with Dr. Karellas. He is an NIH-funded investigator.  His research interests are in development of new imaging techniques, technologies and devices for breast cancer, vascular and tomographic imaging. He has a strong background in x-ray engineering, computers, mathematical modeling of image formation and in experimental techniques for the assessment of image quality. Dr. Vedantham has an extensive record of key publications on the experimental and computations aspects of digital x-ray imaging with focus on digital mammography, digital fluoroscopy, and tomographic imaging.
