Potential Trouble Spots

Elevators - Don’t get into elevators with people who look out of place or behave in a strange or threatening manner. If you find yourself in an elevator with someone who makes you nervous, get off as soon as possible. Try not to use building or garage elevators alone. If you must use the elevator while alone, stand near the entrance and the emergency stop alarm button. Call for a POLICE ESCORT instead of taking the garage elevator alone.

Parking Lots - Lock your vehicle and roll the windows up firmly. Do not leave vents or windows ajar. Do not leave suitcases, cameras, attaché cases, or packages where they can be seen. Place them in your trunk. Cassettes and other small valuable items should be placed in the glove compartments. CD and cassette players, and removable stereos should be placed in the trunk. If you notice any strangers hanging around the parking lot, CALL THE POLICE DEPT.

Parking Garages - As with parking lots, lock your vehicle and conceal your valuables. When you enter a stairwell, look up and down the stairs for suspicious characters before you proceed. Have your keys in your hand before arriving at your vehicle, and look inside before entering. While driving, insure that your doors are locked and your windows are not completely down. Do not pick up hitchhikers, and if you see an accident and are being “waved down” by a stranger, notify the police at the nearest safe location, gas station, convenience store, etc.

Restrooms - Attackers can hide in stalls and corners. Look into corners, and check the stall before entering. Be extra cautious when using restrooms that are isolated or poorly lighted.

Street Smarts - The best defense against the purse snatcher is to walk with purse or briefcase in the hand away from the street. If you carry a wallet, place it in your front pants pocket or separate from your handbag. If you carry a purse, wear the straps over your shoulder with the bag suspended between your arm and body. A handbag with a short strap or strapless handbag should be carried like a football. Never carry a handbag with the straps across the body. I you are being followed, walk to the nearest public place, or to the nearest phone. If walking at night, be cognizant that doorways or shrubbery can conceal an assailant.

Do Not Walk Alone - If you leave work at an unusual time, and you thing you must walk alone, DON’T DO IT !!!!!!!!!! CALL FOR A POLICE ESCORT!!!
