Dr. Jayendra K. Patel completed his Psychiatry Residency and a Fellowship in Research and Schizophrenia at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts. He was Medical Director of the Commonwealth Research and Evaluation Unit, Commonwealth Research Center, Harvard Medical School for 7 years before moving to UMass in 2000.

Dr. Patel was a site-PI for the NIMH sponsored Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) schizophrenia study and the STEP-BD study for Bipolar Disorders--largest studies of their kind ever funded by NIMH for these disorders. As a member of a select group of researchers who were invited to form the NIMH supported Schizophrenia Trials Network (STN), Dr. Patel belongs to a national organization of researchers involved in implementing large, clinically important psychopharmacological trials in schizophrenia. Based on the important findings from the CATIE study that weight gain, diabetes and metabolic issues were a major limiting factor of current antipsychotic treatments, the group has started implementing the next generation of studies that include NIH sponsored Clinical Management of Metabolic Problems in Patients with Schizophrenia (CAMP) study. This study includes Psychopharmacological as well as Behavioral Treatment Interventions for Weight Reduction in Schizophrenia. The STN group is about to start two new pilot studies that will use preemptive approaches to prevent/decrease adverse effects associated with antipsychotic medications during the early years of schizophrenia. Dr. Patel is involved in research projects focusing on Prodromal and First Episode of Psychosis patients.

Dr. Patel has received numerous awards including the Annual Paul Barreira Award for excellence in teaching four times from the psychiatry residents at UMass. He received the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents from the APA in 2006.

Dr. Patel can be contacted at his new office located in Lake Charles, LA by calling 337-478-9331.
