As the Director of the Tobacco-Free Initiative, Director of the Tobacco Consultation Services, and instructor in the UMass Medical School of Medicine, Mr. Seward both oversees the ongoing development and implementation of the tobacco policies and environment, staff, and patient supports for UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Medical School including supporting UMass Memorial Health Care member hospitals and organizations. He has lectured on organizational change as well as taught on tobacco treatment as part of consulting with health care organizations in the USA and Canada. His medical and research career has been in service to hospital and healthcare organizations, faculty and staff as well as patients with serious medical, mental illness and substance abuse disorders. A sought after consultant and speaker, he has consulted to ASAM on their Nicotine Public Policies and their Diagnostic and Descriptive Terminology Action Group. He has presented on Nicotine Dependence and Treatment to the Cape Cod and West Coast Symposiums on Addictive Disorders, The Partners Annual Tobacco Treatment Retreat, and The Spectrum Health Systems Annual Women’s Addiction Conference. His photographic work has been chosen twice to be exhibited in the UMass Medical School Library's Artist in Residency Series.
