Training Director

Director Sheldon BenjaminOur Training Director, Sheldon Benjamin, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology and Director of Neuropsychiatry at UMass Medical School, where he is also Vice Chair for Education in Psychiatry. He has been Director of the Psychiatry Residency Program since 1995, co-directs the Combined Neuropsychiatry Residency, and is Director of the Neuropsychiatry Fellowship Program. He has been a member of the UMass Medical School faculty since 1986. Having completed residency training in Psychiatry and Neurology, and fellowship training in Behavioral Neurology, Dr. Benjamin is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both Psychiatry and Neurology, and by the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties in Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry. He was recognized by the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society as the 2001 Psychiatric Educator of the Year,was elected by the UMass Medical School faculty to receive the Lamar Soutter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Education in 2008, and was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for Distinguished Teaching in 2012. He has published and lectured widely on neuropsychiatric topics and is a leader in the area of Neuropsychiatric Education. Dr. Benjamin was President of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training for 2010-2011 and is currently President Elect of the American Neuropsychiatric Association.  He is also co-author of The Brain Card®.

Dr. Benjamin's background is in both psychodynamic psychiatry and behavioral neurology. He feels strongly that UMass residents should be trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, community psychiatry, and neuroscientifically-informed biological psychiatry, in addition to becoming effective advocates and teachers.

Associate Training Director

Fleming-Ives

Our Associate Training Director, Kathryn Fleming-Ives, M.D., a graduate of Connecticut College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, completed her adult psychiatry training at Brown University. Her academic interests include improving methods of teaching and evaluation in psychiatric education, women in medicine and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Her clinical focus is in the outpatient treatment of anxiety and mood disorders using combined psychopharmacology and psychotherapy.

Associate Director of Neuropsychiatry Training

EisenstockOur Associate Director of Neuropsychiatry and Neuropsychiatry Training, Jordan Eisenstock, M.D., is a graduate of Georgetown University, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and the UMass Combined Neuropsychiatry Residency Program. He is also the Director of Neurorehabilitation in charge of both Psychiatry and Neurology at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, one of our teaching affiliates. His academic interests include traumatic brain injuries in athletes, quality management, and teaching clinical neuropsychiatry.

Program Coordinator

VickieWhite

Our program coordinator, Vickie White, has been a residency training coordinator for over 20 years. She joined the Psychiatry program in 2000 after 13 years as the UMass Pediatrics residency coordinator. Vickie has presented several workshops on residency administration at annual meetings of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT) and regularly provides training to other program coordinators at UMass. She currently serves as the Program Chair for the coordinator’s section of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training annual meeting.
