The University of Massachusetts Medical School and Worcester State Hospital offer a pre-doctoral internship in psychology. The program is accredited by the American Psychological Association. It is one of the oldest continuously offered internships in psychology in the country. 

The program offers four full-time funded internship positions that carry a stipend of $16,640 per year, subject to availability of funds. The program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers and subscribes to its uniform notification procedures. 

There are several requirements and guiding principles we follow in this selection process:

Applicants must be in good standing in a doctoral program in psychology in an accredited educational institution and must have completed at least two years of graduate study prior to the internship year. Applicants must have completed appropriate practica and be approved by their Director of Training as prepared for internship. Preference will be given to students from clinical psychology programs accredited by the American Psychological Association.

We do not publish any minimum number of hours of assessment and intervention. We carefully review each application to see the “goodness of fit”, i.e., the match of your stated training goals and experience with what our internship has to offer. We do look closely at the breadth of practicum experiences an applicant has and how their doctoral training has prepared them to be trained at an intermediate to advanced level. We review the applicant’s coursework to see if the academic preparation is consistent with the type of training activities the intern will pursue.
