Xueqin Song, MD

Xueqin Song, MD, has joined the Department of Psychiatry at the UMass Chan Medical School (UMass Chan), UMass Memorial Health Care, as a visiting professor, and is collaborating with Xiaoduo Fan, MD, MPH, MS, director of the Psychotic Disorders Clinical and Research Program.

Dr. Song’s research interests include the etiology of schizophrenia and side effects of antipsychotics, with a particular emphasis on the role of inflammation and immune dysfunction in relation to schizophrenia and antipsychotics-induced metabolic problems. Her research goals are to clarify the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and develop intervention strategies to reduce the side-effects of antipsychotics.

Song, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Zhengzhou University, China, has said her year-long visit at UMass Chan will dramatically enhance her clinical work and approach to teaching in the field of psychiatric disorders.

Song earned her MD at Central South University, China, where she was trained by Dr. Jingping Zhao, president of the Chinese Society of Psychiatry. She was a resident physician and physician-in-charge at Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical College.

The author and co-author of many studies in her field, Song is a member of the Henan Medical Association and vice-chair of the Henan Pharmacological Association.

Fan’s primary responsibilities at UMass Chan are to develop an interdisciplinary, translational clinical research program, as well as a specialty clinic in psychotic disorders. He also will be involved in teaching and training activities for students, residents and fellows.

His research focuses on pharmacological interventions for refractory psychotic symptoms, cognitive deficits, cardiometabolic comorbidity and real life functioning in patients with schizophrenia. He is also interested in cultural aspects of psychiatry, particularly mental health issues in Asian populations.
