Eighth Annual Central Massachusetts Regional Brain Bee
We are pleased to announce that the Department of Psychiatry and its Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute (BNRI) will be holding the 8th Annual Central Massachusetts Regional Brain Bee on
Saturday, February 1, 2014, 1:00 PM
UMass Medical School Amphitheater III (6th floor)
This is an opportunity for high-school students in grades 9 - 12 to learn about Neuroscience and the human brain, and to compete with other students in Central Massachusetts for an opportunity to represent our region in the U.S. National Brain Bee (NBB).
The registration deadline is January 15th. Students may organize and bring a school team, but this is an individual competition. To register, each student must submit his/her name, school, grade and an email address to: PsychiatryBrainBee@umassmed.edu. In early January, we will send final instructions to participating schools and registered students.
Appropriate study material is available here. Please see below for more information on the program.
The approximately 3-hour long competition will combine point scores for:
A written test with 25 multiple choice questions (75 pts.)
Neuro-anatomy, identifying labeled parts of human brain models (20 pts)
Patient diagnosis of neurological conditions from symptoms presented (5 pts.)
The ten highest scorers then compete in a round robin oral questioning period until a winner is determined.
The winner of the Central MA Regional Brain Bee, and a chaperone, will receive a 3 day trip to the USA National Brain Bee in Baltimore March 14th and 15th.
In addition to the competition, we will have one of our own local experts provide a presentation on a related topic.
We are very excited that we are able to continue to bring this opportunity to not only Central Massachusetts students but to other surrounding regions as well!
