UMass Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry

The Addiction Psychiatry fellowship, offered through the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center, provides psychiatrists with advanced training in the bio-psycho-social formulation and treatment of addictive disorders, as well as many clinical and translational research opportunities.

The Department of Psychiatry is committed to a major expansion of clinical and research services in the addictions, and the establishment of an academic Center of Excellence in Addictions. During your training you will learned a comprehensive approach to the treatment of additive disorders in a department with a major focus on addiction, that includes psychopharmacology, multiculturalism, basic neuroscience, psychosomatic medicine and state-of-the-art psychosocial interventions. The clinical rotations have public, Veterans Affairs, and private sector affiliations.  These consist of a public sector adolescent detoxification and rehabilitation unit, a general hospital buprenorphine clinic within our Addiction and Comorbidity Treatment Service (ACTS), an organizational-wide tobacco cessation program, a Veterans Center for addiction treatment and a continuum of care for opioid dependent patients from detoxification through substitution therapy to community rehabilitation.

The overall goal of the program is to provide fellows with the education and learning experience to develop the expertise in the assessment, treatment and coordination of comprehensive care for individuals with substance use disorders. The training also provides fellows with experience in co-occurring mental illness and addiction; experience in rehabilitation and longer term residential services for individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and medical conditions such as chronic pain; and experience with several psychotherapy modalities, including group treatment programs.

The primary training rotation sites are the UMass Memorial HealthcareCommunity HealthlinkBedford VA Hospital, AdCare Hospital, and Spectrum Health Systems.  The schedules are designed to provide the rotations needed to expose the resident to the appropriate array of treatment modalities and experiences in treating different patient populations.
