We are pleased to announce that the University of Massachusetts Medical School Department of Psychiatry along with the Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute (BNRI) will be holding its 7th Annual Central Massachusetts Regional Brain Bee on

 Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 1:00 pm
UMass Medical School
Worcester, MA

This is an opportunity for high-school students in grades 9 - 12 to learn about Neuroscience and the human brain, and to compete with other students in Central Massachusetts for an opportunity to represent our region in the U.S. National Brain Bee (NBB).

There are updated study materials this year – click here for the PDF.

The approximately 3-hour long competition will combine point scores for:

  1. A written test with 25 multiple choice questions (75 pts.)
  2. Neuro-anatomy, identifying labeled parts of human brain models (20 pts)
  3. Patient diagnosis of neurological conditions from symptoms presented (5 pts.)

The ten highest scorers then compete in a round robin oral questioning period until a winner is determined.

In addition to the competition, we will have one of our own local experts provide a presentation on a related topic.

The winner of the Central MA Regional Brain Bee, and a chaperone, will receive a 3 day trip to the USA National Brain Bee in Baltimore March 2nd – 4th.

If you are interested in participating, you must notify us by January 15th. You may organize and bring a school team, but this is an individual competition. To register, please send your name, school, grade and an email address where you can be notified of the details of the event to the contact listed below.

We are very excited that we are able to continue to bring this opportunity to not only Central Massachusetts students but to other surrounding regions as well! In early January, we will send final instructions to participating schools, including a detailed schedule and directions for travel to UMass Medical School. Please contact me in the meantime if you have any questions.
