Adenosine, a naturally produced breakdown product of ATP, has been implicated in the modulation of coronary blood flow, impulse conduction, and contractile function of the heart. Previous studies in this laboratory have focused specifically on the role of adenosine in the control of myocardial responses to adrenergic stimulation. Presently interest is placed on the impact of adenosine A1 and A2A receptor activation on the control of protein phosphatase and protein kinase C activities as they relate to adrenergic stimulation. Other areas of interest involve the effect of heart aging on nucleoside metabolism and transport, and investigations into the aging-induced loss of preconditioning response in the ischemic myocardium.
