Clinical Activities

My clinical activities specifically focus on diagnostic neuropathology and neuromuscular pathology. I am responsible for all clinical neuropathology services at UMMHC and its affiliated hospitals. I also serve as a consultant neuropathologist for a number of hospitals in Central, Western and Southeastern Massachusetts and for the Western Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. I am the medical director of diagnostic electron microscopy for UMMHC hospitals.

Teaching

I have a strong interest in and major commitment to undergraduate and graduate medical education.  My undergraduate educational activities include co-directorships of the Mind, Brain, and Behavior (MBB2) and Biology of Disease (BoD) courses for the 2nd year medical students as well as being the General Pathology block coordinator in the BoD course.  I am an active lecturer and laboratory instructor in both of these courses and in the 1st year Histology and MBB1 (Neuroscience) courses.  I am an active member of a number of medical school committees and working groups, including Chair of the Second Year Curriculum Committee, and am an active participant in the ongoing curriculum revision effort in the medical school.  My graduate medical educational activities primarily involve teaching Neurology and Pathology residents rotating through the neuropathology service.

Research Interests

My research/scholarly interests have focused on clinically-related topics and include retrospective studies using archival case material and prospective clinico-pathological projects. I have also served as neuropathology consultant for individual investigators and several program projects in other UMMS departments.  Recent interests have included forensic neuropathology and CNS neoplasia.
