General Pathology, mechanisms of disease
Since 1973, when I joined UMass, I have been collaborating with Drs. Isabelle Joris, Thomas Zand, Henri Cuénoud and other colleagues in studies on the pathogenesis of vascular injury. More specifically, we have worked on mechanisms of microvascular leakage in inflammation, on arterial changes in spasm, on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, on the role of shear stress in intimal damage, and related topics. I am generally interested in the pathophysiology of inflammation, in the structure and function of myofibroblasts, and in cell injury and cell death.
Medical history is another major focus. Since I published The Healing Hand in 1975, I have written various papers on topics in medical history, including the discovery of the plaster cast (with Dr. Joris) and the history of infection.
After the second edition of the textbook, "Cells, Tissues, and Disease. Principles of General Pathology" is finished, I plan to return to The Healing Hand and complete the second volume (the history of the wound from 200 A.D. to the present).
