Division of Palliative Medicine

Clinical Care

Offered through the Department of Medicine, the Palliative Care Consultation Service provides “hospice philosophy” care to patients in the hospital setting and at various stages throughout the course of their illness. Under the direction of Mary Valliere, MD, medical director of hospice, the service complements the standard medical care of patients with chronic and progressive illness.

The Institute of Medicine defines palliative care as “seeking to prevent, relieve, reduce or soothe the symptoms of a disease or disorder without affecting a cure…Palliative care in this broad sense is not restricted to those who are dying or those enrolled in hospice programs…It attends closely to the emotional, spiritual and practical needs and goals of patients and those close to them.”

The service is designed to meet the mission by providing:

  • Coordinated care with a patient’s primary health care team
  • Expertise in pain and other symptom management
  • Help for patients and families in discussing and deciding about goals of care and advance directives
  • Care consistent with patient and families values and beliefs
  • Assistance in coordinating care across all health care settings
Services

We strive to provide continuous palliative care from early to late stages of disease. It is our aim to complement the care provided by the patient’s physician and primary treatment team, and our palliative care providers communicate regularly with other members of the care team. We work closely with physicians, nurses, care coordinators, social workers, spiritual advisors and others to implement a treatment plan that addresses the physicial, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families.

Palliative care visits are usually conducted on weekdays, however weekend coverage is available to help manage uncontrolled pain and other symptoms.
