Medical students who enroll in the course will participate alongside attending physicians, psychologists, fellows, residents, and nursing students. The training consists of 5 group sessions, with time between each session to allow the learner to integrate the skills into practice and build on these skills in subsequent sessions. The group sessions include active strategies appropriate for adult learning and the development of a clinical competence, such as Motivational Interviewing. Learners will practice their skills, engage in discussions, and view demonstrations.Sessions include individual skills practice with a trained Acting Patient, allowing the learner to practice new skills in a safe and supportive environment. These practice experiences can be scheduled at the learner's convenience. Each learner receives written feedback on their strengths and opportunities for improvement. In addition, each learner receives 2 sessions of individual coaching with an expert in Motivational Interviewing.
