International Medical Education
Mission Statement
This program adds a global dimension to medical education at UMMS by supporting international electives by UMMS students and electives at UMMS by students from foreign medical schools with whom we have a formal exchange program. With respect to our own students, the primary goals are to develop linguistic, cultural and physical diagnosis skills to enable them to better serve a rapidly expanding immigrant and refugee population in Massachusetts and the United States.

Project highlights
- In the past six years, UMMS medical students have been trained in medical facilities and language schools in forty-seven countries.
- Since 1997, one hundred sixty-seven UMMS students have traveled to forty-seven different countries.
- Since July 1999, thirty-five students from foreign medical schools with whom we have a formal exchange program, have completed clinical electives at UMMS.
- A specific program, a four-year Pathway on Serving Multicultural and Underserved Populations, which integrates domestic and international experiences with such populations throughout medical school, now has eighty-five student participants since its inception in 1998.

- The formation of a UMMS Rotaract Club has led to an exciting relationship with Rotary International including access to its vast global network and its Overseas Volunteers Scholarships.
