Work-Life and Career Flexibility
Work-life, also known as family-friendly, initiatives facilitate flexibility in academic careers. UMMS provides policies, procedures and resources in the following areas to assist faculty achieve personal wellness and work-life balance:
Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society: The Center has pioneered the integration of mindfulness-based approaches in mainstream medicine and healthcare through patient care, research, academic medical and professional education. The Center includes the Stress Reduction Clinic – the oldest and largest academic medical center-based stress reduction program in the world. For more information see the Center website.
Child Care Services: UMMS sponsors two child care centers for infants, toddlers and preschool children close to University and Memorial campuses, respectively. For more information see the Human Resources Child Care webpage.
Diversity and Inclusion: Diversity is inherent in University of Massachusetts Medical School’s mission to advance the health and well-being of the people of the Commonwealth and the world through pioneering education, research and health care delivery. Dual Career Hires: Although UMMS currently does not have a formal policy for the hire of both partners, we actively seek opportunities for the partner of a faculty candidate during the recruitment process.
Early/Phased Retirement: UMMS currently does not have a policy or procedure for faculty to take early retirement or to phase in retirement but individual faculty may negotiate with their Department chair to establish a plan for retirement.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP): UMMS maintains an extensive employee assistance program through the Human Resources Department. Faculty may contact the EAP to seek help and resources for a wide range of personal problems and issues. For more information see the EAP website.
Extension of Probationary Period (for tenure): The 8-year probationary period for faculty on the tenure track may be extended to a maximum of 12 years on request by the faculty member and upon written agreement of the faculty member, the Department Chair, the Dean, and the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Extension of the probationary period may be extended for a range of compelling circumstances, including both professional and personal situations. Family and Medical Leave: The UMMS policy on Family and Medical Leave defines the conditions under which employees may be granted leave pursuant to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This policy provides support for employees requiring a leave of absence for the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child, for serious personal or family health reasons, or for the care of a military service member and qualifying exigency leave. Fitness Centers: UMMS has two fitness centers, one located on the University Campus and the other at South Street, Shrewsbury. For more information see the Human Resources Wellness website.
Off-Campus Electronic Access: All UMMS faculty have off-campus access to email and other electronic resources. For more information, see Information Services (intranet site).
Part-time Appointments: Both tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty may seek a part-time appointment by negotiation with their department chair. Faculty must be employed for a minimum of 20 hours per week to qualify for full benefits. Over 300 employed UMMS faculty currently have part-time appointments.
UMMS Faculty Scholar Award: The goal of this award is to assist faculty during a finite period of increased family care responsibilities by providing professional assistance to continue research and/or scholarly efforts while family obligations are addressed. The award provides funding of up to $30,000. Funds may be used to support personnel, services, supplies or ‘buy out’ of clinical time to provide opportunity for academic/scholarly work. The award is open to both women and men, and is limited to one year, with the option to apply for a one-year no-cost extension. For more information, see Faculty Scholar Award webpage.
