Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility
UMMS will submit an application for the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility. Applications are restricted to medical schools and five awards of $250,000 each will be funded. The award process is administered by the American Council on Education (ACE) and consists of three stages:
- Submission of an Institutional Survey on Faculty Career Flexibility. UMMS Office of Faculty Affairs completed and submitted this in December 2011.
- Participation in an online Faculty Questionnaire on Career Flexibility, to be conducted in February/March 2012.
- Submission of an application for an Accelerator Grant, due May 1, 2012.
Selection of schools for funding will be based in part on the results of the two surveys. OF NOTE: a minimum response rate of 40% is required for the Faculty Questionnaire.
The Faculty Questionnaire was formally announced on January 25, 2012, with an email communication
from Dean Flotte to all full-time (>0.75 FTE), employed faculty in the School of Medicine. Faculty received an email from ACE on February 1, 2012, with information about the Faculty Questionnaire; this email has the subject header: ACE Sloan Faculty Questionnaire – Please Respond — image of email below:

- The Faculty Questionnaire will address issues such as family medical leave, part-time faculty, hiring of spouses, tenure clock extension, and work-life balance.
- This study has been exempted from IRB review by the UMMS Committee for Protection of Human Subjects (Protocol # 14538).
- The survey is voluntary and responses will be kept confidential. ACE will receive and analyze the data and only provide reports in aggregate form to UMMS.
- Questions concerning the survey should be addressed to the Office of Faculty Affairs (faculty.affairs@umassmed.edu; 508.856.3244) or to the UMMS Committee for Protection of Human Subjects (508.856.4261).
In addition to helping secure funding for this important initiative, the survey will be an important source of information that will influence decisions on policies and procedures that provide career flexibility for faculty.
