Dental Residency Program

Purpose

The dental residency program at UMass Medical School was developed to improve the oral health for people in Central Massachusetts by training general practice residents to handle a broad array of complex dental problems in underserved and medically compromised patients. The Residency has three areas of focus it hopes to impart on its students:

  • Desire for life long learning
  • Integration of oral health as part of a person’s overall health
  • Commitment to continuing community service

Evolution

Through generous funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and The Health Foundation of Central Mass, planning efforts were initiated by the dental services program at the Office of Community Program (OCP) in 2003 . Working closely with a consultant from the Tufts University School of Dentistry, OCP facilitated the design and development of the general practice dental residency program. Site visits with representatives from the American Dental Association (ADA) were held in October of 2004 and ADA accreditation was awarded in January of 2005. Two residents were accepted in the first year of the program which will began in July of 2005. The program accepted four residents in both 2006 and 2007 and six residents in 2008.
