Health Insurance Options for External Researchers
It is strongly recommended that External Researchers have adequate health insurance coverage regardless of their visa status. External Researchers who are J-1 Exchange Visitors must have coverage that meets that Department of State’s (DOS) J-1 Exchange Visitor requirements (if applicable).
Massachusetts Health Connector Plans are designed for individuals who are not eligible for benefits through UMMS. Health Connector offers plans from six of Massachusett’s major insurance carriers and each carrier offers at least three coverage options that offer varying benefit levels and premiums to meet your needs. To enroll in one of these programs visit www.mahealthconnector.org or call 1-877-623-6765 to compare the options. External Researchers should carefully review each policy option, particularly the deductibles (must be less than $500 to meet the J requirements) and choose a plan that meets the J-1 Exchange Visitor requirements.
Other options for coverage: Many External Researchers are set up with appropriate insurance coverage by their financial sponsor or home government before arriving in the U.S. If this is the case, please insure that the coverage provided meets the J-1 requirements and be sure to bring proof of this coverage (with english translation where appropriate) to the U.S. In addition, NAFSA: Association of International Educators provides a list of various health insurance companies that provide coverage that meets the J minimums.
As an added benefit, UMMS provides Repatriation and Evacuation Insurance to all employees and External Researchers on F-1, J-1, and H-1B1 visas (this covers a portion of the J-1 minimum requirements – so does not need to be purchased separately if it is not included in the chosen insurance plan). Neither the Benefits Office nor the ISSO can evaluate specific policy minimums or recommend / endorse any particular policy.
All J-1 Exchange Visitors must sign a J-1 Attestation Form, confirming that they understand the J health insurance requirements, are aware of the penalties for non-compliance and indicate that they are enrolled in another health insurance program. This statement must be completed at or prior to any new employee appointment with the International Students and Scholars Office.
