An exciting week of events leads up to Commencement 2017

Festivities for SOM, GSN and GSBS students, alumni and faculty begin Thursday

With UMass Medical School’s 44th Commencement just around the corner, the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Graduate School of Nursing will kick off three days of celebration as they honor the achievements of the students who will receive their degrees on Sunday, June 4.

On Thursday, June 1, the GSBS will host their eighth annual GSBS Student Academic Achievement Awards ceremony at 3 p.m. in The Cube of the Albert Sherman Center. A reception will follow at 4 p.m.

Also on Thursday, the GSN Alumni Association will host a celebration that begins with the Lillian R. Goodman Lectureship in Graduate Nursing at 4 p.m. in the ASC Auditorium. GSN alum and current Secretary of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Alice Bonner, PhD, will present the lecture. Immediately following, an alumni dinner in the ASC multipurpose room will be held, at which student awards will presented.

On Friday, June 2, the SOM Alumni Association will host its annual breakfast at 9 a.m. in the Faculty Conference Room. Outstanding medical educator awards will be presented and the members of the class of 2017 will be welcomed as alumni.

On Saturday, June 3, a private dinner will be held to for honorary degree recipients, including physician, scientist and academic health leader Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD; humanitarian and businessman Víctor Grífols, president of Grifols; and Patricia Donahoe, MD, a renowned pediatric surgeon and cancer researcher. Dr. Rice will deliver the Commencement address on Sunday.

Also on Saturday evening, graduates of all three schools and their families, as well as members of the UMMS community are invited to join in a campus celebration featuring live music and dancing in the multipurpose room of the ASC. Hors d’oeuvres, drinks and dessert will be served.

And finally, on Sunday, June 4, Commencement will take place at noon in the tent on the campus green. A complementary brunch will be available on campus for students and their guests. Buffet service will be offered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Faculty Conference Room, both of the Medical School lobbies and in the multipurpose room in the ASC, with seating available outside as weather permits.
