Jean King, PhD, has been named vice provost for biomedical research, according to Terence R. Flotte, MD, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Flotte said that as associate provost, Dr. King successfully led the Office of Research to an impressive $280 million (FY16) in funding over the past two years, a figure that is worth noting particularly because it was achieved during a period of constrained federal funding.

“Biomedical research is at the very core of our mission to advance the health and well-being of the people of the commonwealth and the world and Dr. King has worked diligently to provide thoughtful guidance, partnership and support to faculty and research staff in our departments, institutes, centers and programs,” Flotte said.

Recently, Dr. King played an instrumental role in enhancing the research cores at UMass Medical School by establishing a world-class High-Resolution Cyro-Electron Microscopy facility, which opened last month. As home to the only such facility in New England, the new Cryo-EM facility solidifies the institution’s stature as a leader in the basic sciences, while helping to unlock a new world of discovery for the scientific community, as well as to the school’s academic and commercial partners. Through her leadership in organizing the annual UMMS research retreat, the school is able to highlight the work of both established and new faculty members, while bolstering the collaborative and collegial atmosphere for which it is known.

As vice provost for research, King will continue as director of the Center for Comparative Neuroimaging and as professor of psychiatry, radiology and neurology.
