The 21 members of the Junior Faculty Development Program Class of 2016 were honored for their achievements during a graduation ceremony at UMass Medical School.

The intensive professional development experience for junior faculty is designed to accelerate the academic and professional development of junior faculty. The program comprises a comprehensive curriculum of 30 weekly classes through the academic year, and an individual project completed under the guidance of a senior faculty mentor. Since its introduction at UMMS by course developers Robert Milner, PhD, associate vice provost for professional development and professor of neurology, and Luanne Thorndyke, MD, vice provost for faculty affairs and professor of medicine, the program has become a national model. Since its inception, 133 junior faculty have participated.

This year’s projects addressed a range of participants’ clinical and educational interests including adolescent self-harm attempts and associated use of social media; comprehensive care of the geriatric acute care surgical patient; and improving access and distribution Naloxone rescue kits in Massachusetts pharmacies.

Class members (including one participant from UMass Lowell) were recognized alongside their mentors in the presence of family and friends at a ceremony held May 19. The 2016 Junior Faculty Development Program graduates are:
