Elaine Martin |
The Medical Library Association has announced that Elaine Martin, DA, will be the recipient of its 2016 T. Mark Hodges International Service Award. Dr. Martin is director of library services for the Lamar Soutter Library and associate professor of family medicine & community health at UMMS, and director of the National Network of Medical Libraries New England Region. The award reciognizes her work to re-establish the medical library at the A.M. Dogliotti Medical College in Monrovia, Liberia, following a decade of civil war that all but destroyed it.
The late T. Mark Hodges was a lifelong believer in the importance of international connections between librarians. The award in his name was established in 2007 to honor outstanding individual achievement in promoting, enabling and/or delivering improvements in the quality of health information internationally through the development of health information professionals, the improvement of libraries or an increased use of health information services.
Martin, a nationally recognized pioneer of library automation and electronic access, has been at UMMS since 1998. Previously director of the health sciences library at the University of Illinois at Chicago, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston University, a master’s in English from the University of Chicago, an MSLS with a specialization in health sciences librarianship from Catholic University of America and a DA in library administration from Simmons College. Among her previous honors are the 2006 University of Massachusetts President’s Public Service Award and the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Advancing the UMMS Mission.
Martin will accept the Hodges International Service Award at the Medical Library Association’s annual meeting in Toronto on May 17.
