UMass Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry will host the 10th Annual Central Massachusetts Regional Brain Bee on Saturday, Feb. 27, on the university campus in Worcester.
A nationwide program created by the Society for Neuroscience, the competition is meant to bolster high school student interest in medical and laboratory neuroscience careers. Simply put, it’s a spelling bee, but to test participants’ knowledge of neuroscience.
This is the 10th year the Department of Psychiatry has offered the event, which tests teenagers’ knowledge of neuroscience with a 25-question, multiple choice exam; ability to label parts of the brain (neuro-anatomy); and skill in diagnosing neuropsychiatric conditions. The 10 highest scorers then compete in a round robin oral questioning period until a winner is determined.
The department recognizes the winner with the Andrew M. Sheridan Young Neuroscientist Award and then sponsors his or her trip to the National Brain Bee competition at the society’s Baltimore headquarters in March.
