Akindele joins Office of Community and Government relations as senior director

Kola Akindele, JD, has joined the UMass Medical School Office of Community and Government relations as senior director. Immediately prior to joining UMMS, Akindele was the community relations manager at Hartford Hospital. From 2010 to 2013, he served as a community relations associate in the Office of Community and Government Relations at UMMS.

Under the direction of James Leary, JD, vice chancellor of community and government relations, Kola Akindele will lead efforts to develop strategic relationships between UMMS and government and community institutions and organizations, especially in the Worcester region. Among his key responsibilities will be to devise a strategy for the institution’s multi-departmental public health collaboration with the Worcester Division of Public Health.

Other responsibilities include creating and leading a strategy to increase external community engagement by members of the UMMS community and coordinating annual system-wide community engagement and charitable campaigns. He will also support Leary in government advocacy on behalf of UMMS, including direct advocacy with city government leaders.

Akindele earned his undergraduate degree from UMass Boston and his law degree from Northeastern University School of Law. He also earned a master’s in health informatics and management and a certificate in health policy from UMass Lowell. He has been involved with many local community organizations, including the American Red Cross, Veteran’s Inc., the Worcester County Bar Association and the YMCA of Central Massachusetts.

Akindele grew up in Worcester and graduated from Holy Name High School; he lives here with his wife and two children.
