When Worcester’s Elm Park turns into a temporary art gallery this month, a little bit of the collection will extend to the UMass Medical School campus, which will host a sculptural installation by artist Phil Marshall in the patio area south of the Albert Sherman Center.  The sculpture, similar to the one in the photograph here, will have a temporary home on campus through the fall as part of an exhibition across Worcester of 23 works by 19 artists from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New York and Michigan.

This year, Art in the Park received a record 64 entries, from which a panel of jurors selected the works to be displayed.  New this year are sculptures created by coalitions of Worcester Public School art teachers and their students.

Marshall, a sculptor, studied at the University of Liverpool and Clark University. His recent work has been exhibited at The Mount, in Lenox, Mass.; the Fitchburg Art Museum; the Fruitlands Museum and The Sprinkler Factory.

“I derive most excitement and satisfaction from the interaction I have with a piece as it develops and evolves,” Marshall said.  “And I gain additional rewards when overcoming the challenges of producing a piece for a public space.”
