Albert Sherman Center Vivarium recognized with 2015 Turnkey Award for Best Facility

The Albert Sherman Center Vivarium at UMass Medical School has been named the winner of the 2015 Turnkey Award for Best Facility by ALN Magazine. Jerald Silverman, DVM, professor of pathology and director of the Department of Animal Medicine, accepted the award on behalf of UMMS at a ceremony held last month in San Diego.

Intended to showcase new ideas and accomplishments in facility design, construction and operation, the Facility of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievements in the design/build of a new or renovated laboratory animal facility.

Opened in 2013, the Albert Sherman Center, a 512,000 square-foot biomedical research and teaching building, has received LEED Gold Certification, signifying that it meets a nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

“The Sherman Center vivarium has been very positively received by the research faculty and technicians,” said Dr. Silverman “They are conducting important research on gene therapy and gene expression and they look forward to significant life science discoveries that will advance the health and well-being of the people of the commonwealth and the world.”
