Symposium to honor Richard Dutton, PhD

The Pathology Department will host a special symposium on Friday, March 27, in honor of Richard W. Dutton, PhD, professor of pathology, who is retiring.

The event, which will include seminars presented by Dr. Dutton and two guest speakers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine-National Jewish Health, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Albert Sherman Auditorium with a reception to follow in the Cube.

Dutton will present “Preventing distortion of the alpha beta T cell repertoire during the response to antigen.” Guest speaker Philippa C. Marrack, PhD, FRS., Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and distinguished professor, will present “An unexpected population of B cells.”

Guest speaker John W. Kappler, PhD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and distinguished professor, will present “Breaking through T cell self-tolerance.”

Drs. Marrack and Kappler received the 2015 Wolf Prize in Medicine for advancing the understanding of the molecular basis of the immune response.

Dutton is a preeminent scientist in the field of immunology, and former chairman and professor of the Department of Biology at the University of California San Diego prior to his position as a full member of the Trudeau Institute.

Dutton has published more than 200 papers, notably the seminal studies on how T lymphocytes function. Born in Great Britain, Dutton has a PhD in biochemistry from London University. He earned his undergrad and graduate degrees from Cambridge University. He served as president of the American Association of Immunologists (AAI) and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his distinguished scientific accomplishment and extraordinary service to the AAI in April 2004.
