Boston Globe: Being mindful of the moment can help reduce work stress, says UMMS expert

Stressed at work? Stop for a moment and refocus your attention on the here and now, UMass Medical School mindfulness expert Saki Santorelli, EdD, MA, said in a recent Boston Globe column.

Dr. Santorelli, professor of medicine and the executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society, said that “momentum is intoxicating” and at times overwhelming.

In Karen Weintraub’s piece, “Handling Stress at Work,” Santorelli suggests that taking a minute to stop and pay attention to the things happening around you in that moment, such as bodily sensations, emotions and thoughts, can improve effectiveness.
