Nearly half of the nation’s top colleges have tanning beds on campus or in off-campus housing, and some allow students to pay for them with campus cash cards, according to a Good Morning America interview with Sherry Pagoto, PhD, associate professor of medicine, on her new study.

The research, published online in JAMA Dermatology Oct. 29, examined the U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 list of the top 125 colleges for those that house tanning beds either on campus or in off-campus housing.

“In 14 percent of colleges, the campus cash cards that students can use to make purchases for food and books were able to be used to pay for tanning at local salons," said Dr. Pagoto.
