Chancellor Michael F. Collins promised former Gov. Paul Cellucci that he would continue UMass Medical School’s search for a cure for ALS in the days before Cellucci lost his life to the disease last June, according to a report on Charter TV 3’s Worcester News Tonight.
“In his final conversation that I had with him, he said, ‘Michael whatever you do, keep going, don’t give up, keep working to find additional funds for ALS research,’” Chancellor Collins told reporter Siobhan Lopez, in an April 8 interview at UMMS. “’Continue to support my doctors and don’t forget our long term vision which is a cure for ALS.’”
Collins announced a name change for the UMMS research fund, launched with Cellucci’s support and dedicated to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The UMass ALS Champion Fund is now the UMass ALS Cellucci Fund, which will continue to raise philanthropic support for research at UMMS ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
