To accommodate the growing campus, UMMS launched a power plant expansion project in 2010 to add a state-of-the-art, 7.5 megawatt gas-fired turbine and heat recovery steam generator. Melissa L. Lucas, sustainability and energy manager, told the paper that the power plant is central to becoming more environmentally sustainable and energy efficient.
“Our focus is to provide reliable and clean power to UMass Memorial Healthcare and UMass Medical School so we can continue to provide health care for the region and lead in research and also in the training of medical education,” Lucas said. “We need to provide that service. This is how we do it.”
"We're being sensitive and aware to our environment," Joseph P. Collins, director of energy resources said. "Everything has consequences but we believe that we've tried to be as efficient as we can."
