Expanded registration open for Intensive Training in Motivational Interviewing

Technique helps primary care providers influence healthy behavior changes

Earlier this year, thirty faculty members completed UMass Medical School’s inaugural offering of the class Intensive Training in Motivational Interviewing. Beginning this fall, the course is available to all School of Medicine students as an Optional Enrichment Elective, and nurse practitioner-track students in the Graduate School of Nursing are eligible to enroll.

Motivational interviewing is a proven technique enabling health care providers to influence positive behavior change in their patients. Its ultimate goal is for patients to make lifestyle choices that will help them better manage—or even prevent—chronic health problems like diabetes and asthma.

Led by Daniel Mullin, PsyD, assistant professor of family medicine & community health, the course is offered by the Medical School’s Center for Integrated Primary Care.

Registration is now open for fall 2013 sessions. The online version of the five-session course begins Sept. 9, and the in-person series begins Oct. 28.
