AMA’s obesity decision may mean more research

Gitkind on NECN: ‘Serious’ disease deserves recognition

Mitchell Jay Gitkind, MD, clinical associate professor of medicine, was interviewed by New England Cable News and the Worcester Telegram and Gazette on the recent announcement by the American Medical Association to officially recognize obesity as a disease.

Dr. Gitkind said the AMA's decision could mean more funding for research into obesity.

“Obesity is serious—I agree that this is a disease—the AMA is shining a light on this and it will give people more focus and we will be more proactive on prevention and treatment,” he told New England Cable News.
