UMass Medical School is the epicenter of the annual UMass Medicine Cancer Walk, now in its 14th year. When the walk kicks off on the campus green on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m., thousands will participate on behalf of more than 200 fundraising teams from throughout Central Massachusetts—many of them launched by Medical School departments and employees.

Medical School teams include those from the Cancer Research Office, Shriver Center, Surgical Oncology/Surgery, Graduate School of Nursing, Animal Medicine, CWM Office of Program Development, Facilities and, of course, the UMass Medicine Cancer Walk Office itself, among others.

Like those pictured here last year at UMass Medical School, on Sunday, Sept. 23, teams will start the annual UMass Medicine Cancer Walk in front of the soon-to-open Albert Sherman Center, the Medical School’s newest research facility.

The UMass Medicine Cancer Walk raises funds to benefit cancer research and patient care at the UMass Medicine Cancer Center of Excellence. The walk has raised more than $7 million since its inception in 1999.

The walk is now less than a week away, but there’s still plenty of time to register, or to pledge donations to friends and colleagues who are already registered as team leaders and team members. Donations can be made online atwww.firstgiving.com/umasscancerwalk. In appreciation for the homegrown support of the entire UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care community, Chancellor Michael F. Collins and UMass Memorial President and CEO John O’Brien will host luncheons for the top fund-raising teams from their respective organizations.

In addition to walking and donating, a variety of other opportunities to support the Cancer Walk are available between now and Sunday. Eating lunch or dinner at one of several local restaurants that are donating a portion of proceeds from designated times to the Walk is an easy way to contribute, as is patronizing the bake sale being held at the Medical School on Friday, Sept. 21.
