Darshak M. Sanghavi, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, writes in an article on Slate.com about “tiered medicine” that treats patients differently based on how well they follow treatment protocols. Rather than “dumbing down” recommendations that match the ability of the least cooperative patient, “we might be better off tailoring our guidelines to match the skills and proclivities of each individual patient,” writes Dr. Sanghavi.
Sanghavi, who is chief of pediatric cardiology for UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, regularly writes features for National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” the New York Times Magazine, Boston Globe Magazine and Slate, and has appeared on CNN and the “Today Show.”
