The heroic actions of first responders at the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15 exemplify the value and importance of academic medicine in today’s society. They demonstrate the best of us, writes UMass Medical School Chancellor Michael F. Collins in an op-ed for the AMMC Reporter.
Their reflexive response to care for the injured saved lives and is the culmination of investments in our medical schools and teaching hospitals made over many decades. That investment is at risk today, said Chancellor Collins, and how we respond to these challenges will determine if the infrastructure and the environment that represent generations of wise investment in training and research will be there to support the next generation of care givers.
