With recent research showing the risks of spending too much time in your chair, Sherry Pagoto, PhD, associate professor of medicine, talked to Boston Globe reporter Beth Teitell about the “anti-sitting movement” in the Nov. 6 edition.
Dr. Pagoto said she had read so many studies on the effects of being sedentary that she started worrying she was sitting too much, even though she is a physical fitness buff.
“I’ve started to feel like I’m doing something unhealthy,” she told the Globe.
Pagoto began using a standing/walking desk at home and taking breaks to do some form of quick exercise. Her “PlankADay” campaign on Twitter, in which followers Tweet when they’ve done the core-strengthening exercise, has garnered more than 5,000 devotees.
