Seeking exemplars in our midst
The Chancellor’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence in Civility is bestowed annually upon an individual or group that best exemplifies the values described in the UMMS Civility Statement:
The University of Massachusetts Worcester is a large diverse community committed to a civil, respectful and humane workplace. Our commitment to civility contributes to the recruitment and retention of top talent. As a result, we uphold the dignity of the individual in the following ways:
- Conducting oneself with integrity, courtesy and respect toward fellow members of our UMass Worcester community

Diversity is inherent in University of Massachusetts Medical School’s mission to advance the health and well-being of the people of the commonwealth and the world. As a leading academic health sciences center, we are preparing tomorrow’s physicians, nurses and scientists to serve and relate to a multicultural society by:
- Building an inclusive culture characterized by civility and respect
- Increasing numbers of underrepresented groups in student, faculty and staff positions
- Improving the cultural competence of our workforce through diversity education and programming
- Advancing health equity by making a significant impact on reducing disparities through research, service and practice

Nominations for the 2013
Chancellor’s Awards for Advancing Institutional Excellence in Diversity and Civility
are
due in the Diversity and Equal Opportunity Office by Friday, Dec. 14.
Presented by the chancellor in collaboration with the Civility Committee and the Council on Equal Opportunity and Diversity, the awards recognize individuals who support diversity as a driver of the Medical School’s excellence, and demonstrate civility as a core institutional value. The 2013 recipients will be named at the annual UMMS Martin Luther King Day Celebration to be held Monday, Jan. 28, in the Faculty Conference Room.
