Homologous recombination is a universal life process, and our understanding of the process has been in large
part due to studies of recombination systems in Escherichia coli and its phages: RecA-RecBCD, the RecF pathway, the Rac prophage’s RecET, and the phage-encoded homologous recombination systems of phages lambda and T4.
Our studies focus on the phage lambda recombination system, which is called Red. Red is an especially active system, and has proven to be a valuable tool for genetic engineering in bacteria. Our main goal is to obtain a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanism of Red-mediated recombination. A secondary goal is the development of an understanding of the mechanisms of gene amplification.
