Residency Program
City of Worcester
UMass Memorial has benefited tremendously from its location in Worcester. The demographic diversity of Central Massachusetts assures a broad clinical experience for our trainees. Worcester offers other advantages to the prospective house officer. Serving as a resident does not mean that you must ignore lifestyle considerations. We can't think of another area in the Northeast that can match Worcester's combination of accessibility to both outdoor and urban cultural activities, and availability of affordable housing in safe surroundings.
Worcester, the second largest city in New England, has a population of 164,000. Its central location provides easy access to the vacation areas of Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. The attractions of Boston are only a short car ride away.
Worcester has recently experienced a very exciting period of growth. This began with the revitalization of the downtown area, resulting in a multi-million dollar shopping galleria, renovation of the elegant Mechanics Hall, and the opening of the Worcester Civic Center (the Centrum). As the main concert and attraction center of New England, the Centrum has hosted the Boston Symphony and Pops, Ice Capades, Boston Celtics, NHL hockey, and a variety of performers, professional tennis tournaments, and business and craft shows. Many new restaurants have opened since the Centrum's completion.
Greater Worcester is also the home of eight outstanding colleges and universities, four junior colleges, and the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research which recently partnered with UMass. The Worcester Craft Center, newly expanded Worcester Art Museum, Higgins Armory, state parks, theater groups, Old Sturbridge Village, and Mt. Wachusett ski area represent some of the activities available to residents and their families.
Housing is available in Worcester and surrounding towns at a favorable cost compared to other major cities in the region. Interstate highways allow residents to live in rural areas and still be only ten minutes from the hospital.
We feel that it is important for residents and their families to enjoy their leisure time. The resources available in Worcester and throughout the state offer residents opportunities for fun and excitement. We hope you will take full advantage of them.
