Residency Program
The Program
The goal of our three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program is to provide training in subspecialty and general internal medicine as a background for individual career choices. We strive to educate our residents in the broad field of internal medicine including such areas as cost containment, medical decision making, medical ethics, behavior modification, preventive medicine, and the resident as educator.
Our program is unique in that housestaff play an active role in its guidance. Housestaff participate in discussions about patient care issues and in formulating residency program policy. The Executive Residency Council (ERC), composed of two residents from each level of training, chief residents, program directors, faculty members and the administrative coordinator, meets monthly to evaluate and discuss improvements to the program. Less formal housestaff and faculty interactions occur throughout the year, including housestaff lunch meetings, parties, picnics, and retreats.
The educational objectives discussed above are accomplished during an integrated three-year program in a variety of educational settings in inpatient acute care medicine, ambulatory care training, and elective rotations.
Additionally, a series of educational retreats is held throughout the three years to complement the formal training curriculum. For example, a half-day session is devoted to developing residents' teaching skills. Other workshops focus on the resident as "team leader", and "evaluator". Still others explore topics such as practice management, managed care, and career planning. These retreats are emblematic of our program's commitment to offering our residents the broadest possible foundation for a career in health care.
