Directors' Letter
Dear Prospective Resident,
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UMass Memorial. We are certain your interest will grow as you learn more about what we have to offer.
If this Website has a theme, it is diversity and flexibility. Everyone brings to residency their own unique background, personal needs and goals. An enlightened residency must acknowledge and encourage the diversity of its members. If it is to serve their needs and help them to achieve their goals, the program must also be flexible. How do we achieve this at UMass Memorial?
We utilize three distinct inpatient-training venues. We have two campuses based in Worcester. The University campus is the academic, tertiary care medical center. The Memorial campus, one mile away, encompasses an urban, community teaching hospital. Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital, a major teaching affiliate, is a small town community hospital with a primary care orientation. The three hospital experiences complement each one and other.
We have a multitude of sites for ambulatory continuity training ranging from hospital based clinics to community multipractitioner offices to small private practices. Residents are encouraged to select a continuity site that best reflects their personal preferences and objectives.
Our residents may choose training pathways emphasizing specific interests such as research or hospital medicine. Shared or part-time residency positions are offered to enable residents to meet family obligations. Dual specialty tracks such as Medicine/Pediatrics and Medicine/Psychiatry are available as well.
The philosophy of our program has been to provide a solid, well-rounded background in all areas of internal medicine. Training is conducted in a setting of supervised independence; help is available if you need it, but as a resident, you are given the opportunity to develop your own strengths and skills. Ours is a system of graded responsibility built upon a team effort. Through all this, we never lose sight of each resident's need to balance work demands with family and personal demands.
Our graduates are well prepared to pursue careers as primary care practitioners, academicians, and subspecialists. We are proud of what we offer at UMass Memorial.
