Welcome from our Chair, David McManus, MD, ScM 

It is with pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the Department of Medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health. 

The Department of Medicine’s vision is to be the national leader in the delivery of innovative and high-quality patient care, education programs and in transformative basic and clinical research.

Our Department has 16 Divisions and includes over 370 active faculty members. We care deeply about each other, our community, and are dogged in our advocacy for our patients. Our world-class faculty are developing innovative approaches for the prevention and treatment of disease through internationally recognized and world-class research programs, including the Programs in Innate Immunity and Digital Medicine. With 80 principal investigators, the Department of Medicine secured over $83 million in funding in FY23. We contribute to a vibrant academic community at UMass Chan, where we rank in the top 30 of NIH-funded academic institutions.  


Our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health, is the largest healthcare system in Central and Western Massachusetts, featuring three acute care hospitals, and a wide array of clinical services ranging the entire continuum of care.

  • Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao announced a $555,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to UMass Chan on April 10, to be matched with $137,000 private investment, for the establishment of the Health AI Assurance Laboratory, in partnership with MITRE and the Coalition for Health AI.     UMass Chan and MITRE launch Health AI Assurance Laboratory with MassTech grant

    UMass Chan Medical School and MITRE, operator of federally funded research and development centers, announced the establishment of the Health AI Assurance Laboratory, a collaborative initiative to advance health artificial intelligence in the public interest. The initiative is at the forefront of efforts in the United States, and the first in Massachusetts, to ensure AI technology in health care is safe and effective for everyone using it.
