Macy Initiative in Health Communication
Mark Quirk, EdD,
Director of Faculty Development and Member, Evaluation Committee. Dr. Quirk started working with the Macy Project in January 1999, serving on both the faculty development and the research and evaluation committees. As director, his tasks include supervision and communication with the UMMS faculty development group, participation in the UMass Macy Steering and Executive Committees. Over the next 18 months, Dr. Quirk will be responsible for the implementation of faculty development programs, both with undergraduate and graduate preceptors. In addition to directing the Macy faculty development initiative, Dr. Quirk is an active member of the UMMS Macy Evaluation Team. He is helping plan the OSCE and other student outcome measures, and is investigating the use of patient satisfaction and teaching outcome measures. Dr. Quirk is a Professor and Associate Chair of Family Medicine and Community Health, Assistant Dean for Student Academic Achievement at UMMS, and Director of the UMass Community Faculty Development Center. He has developed and implemented faculty development seminars and workshops for residency and medical school faculty at UMass and several other medical schools in the United States. Dr. Quirk has directed federally funded faculty development projects at UMass since 1979; published 40 articles on teaching and evaluation; and authored the book, How to Learn and Teach in Medical School (1994). He was a senior educator with the national faculty development project Primary Care Futures, and most recently directed a national assessment of faculty development for Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health Professions. Dr. Quirk received his EdD from Clark University.
