Named for Dr. Lamar Soutter, the Medical School's founding dean, the Lamar Soutter Library is the only publicly supported academic medical library in the state. Established in 1970, the library has grown from a box-filled room to its present three-level facility. The library serves the medical information needs of the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is open to the public.

The library acquires books, journals, electronic media, and audiovisuals that support the educational, research, and clinical partners within the institution. In addition the library has special collections of rare books, government documents, and consumer health materials.

Some of the library's special services include:

  • Customized Library Services to those patrons not affiliated with UMMS/UMMHC
  • Document Delivery Retrieval Service from the library's journal and book collections for clients around the region and the country
  • Interlibrary Loan/Borrowing from outside sources
  • Literature Search Service to assist UMMS/UMMHC personnel with their research
  • Liaison Program to UMMS/UMMHC faculty to increase communication and provide customized services
  • Outreach Services for interested groups from the medical school and the outside community
  • Pull and Copy Service for UMMS personnel to photocopy materials from our collection
  • UMass HealthNet for consumers via computers installed at affiliated health care organizations
