Information Security

Student laptops are used to access clinical systems, which include Personal Health Information, regulated by the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) security rule. UMass Medical School, in an effort to protect electronic health information, has required all laptops and mobile devices that are accessing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to be encrypted. The temporary storage of PHI should not be stored on any portable device unless absolutely necessary and adheres to the principle of minimum use as outlined by HIPAA. The UMMS IT Department offers encryption, please contact the help Desk ( if your device is non-compliant.

What If Your Laptop is Stolen

In the event that your laptop or other mobile device, such as a smart phone, containing PHI is lost or stolen, UMMS Campus Police should be notified immediately. Campus Police will bring in UMMS Information Security to assist in required investigation and forensics activity.
