Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program

  Fisher

Program Director

Daniel Z. Fisher, MD, PhD

Program Overview

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is a one-year training program in coronary and peripheral interventions designed to prepare the fellow for future high quality practice of interventional cardiovascular medicine.  Qualified candidates who have completed three years of cardiology fellowship will be considered for our program.

We are the highest volume interventional cardiology program in Massachusetts (greater than 1700 coronary interventions per year), and have 5 full time faculty interventional cardiologists with a wide range of clinical and research interests.  In addition, we offer training in peripheral vascular interventions in both the newly designed cardiovascular catheterization suite and as part of a multi-disciplinary vascular consortium.  Because we keep the interventional fellowship deliberately small (maximum of 2 interventional fellows per year), there is a high volume of procedures and personalized mentoring that is helpful for both clinical and academic goals (i.e., interventional cardiology board preparation).

All interventional fellows will participate in interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular conferences, teaching of junior cardiology fellows, and ongoing clinical research trials in the cath lab.

Two positions are offered each year.

Curriculum

The goal of the Interventional Cardiology Service is to develop the ability to diagnose, manage and treat patients with various cardiovascular diseases that are referred for diagnostic cardiac catheterization, percutaneous coronary interventions, pericardiocentesis, valvuloplasty, and intraaortic balloon counterpulsation.  The fellow will learn pre-procedure evaluation of patients, the performance of the procedure and post-procedure care.  The fellow will also learn the ability to consult on acutely ill patients with acute cardiac conditions in an emergency setting.  The fellow will gain experience in the technical aspects of all interventional procedures, pre-procedure evaluations, procedural consultations and post-procedural care.

The clinic rotation is for the interventional cardiology fellow to gain experience and become competent in the pre-procedure evaluation of patients, the consenting of patients and the post-procedure care and education of patients.  The fellow will also gain experience in the outpatient care of patients having had a remote catheter-based therapeutic procedure.

Evaluation Methods

Fellow Evaluation

  • End of rotation verbal evaluation of performance
  • Evaluations using E-value by the supervising attending.  Low score notices and confidential comments will be screened by the Program Director as they are submitted.
  • Biannual verbal feedback and use of E-value evaluations on clinical competence and professional development by the Program Director.

Program Evaluation

  • Quarterly review of rotation by faculty member responsible for rotation
Intermittent review of rotations by Cardiology Advisory Board Committee

  • Program evaluations provided by the fellows in the on-line evaluation system.  Low score notices and confidential comments will be screened by the Program Director as they are submitted.
  • Review by the Program Director of the on-line program evaluations submitted by the fellows annually.
