The interprofessional Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation (iCELS) at UMass Medical School offers health care systems and professionals an opportunity for ongoing credentialing needs and professional development of primary care and specialty clinicians, EMS and other first responders. Because we are located in Worcester, Mass., we are a convenient location for many in the New England area.
Specialty certification courses
Available to health care professionals practicing within the UMass Memorial Healthcare System as well as other health care systems, courses are offered for continuing professional development, required certification and credentialing programs.
Certification courses are provided through the Office of Continuing Education (OCE) at UMass Medical School. The OCME is an American Heart Association Community Training Center (CTC), and is authorized to teach Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Specialty courses offered in the iCELS include:
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), authorized by the American College of Surgeons (ACS); offered four times per year; courses are open to the public.
- Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) sponsored in partnership with the Division of Critical Care Medicine and authorized by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).
- ACLS+ (Moderate Sedation) satisfies the credentialing requirements set forth for clinicians who administer sedation to patients to perform procedures. The course is offered several times throughout the year and it involves didactic presentations followed by hands on practical sessions.
